In the second straw poll held on August 21, Otunnu received five “encourage” votes, improving from his earlier performance and placing him among the top candidates in the race.

The former Ugandan foreign minister and former UN under-secretary-general tied for fifth position among eight candidates participating in the informal voting exercise.

The results showed Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett leading the contest with eight “encourage” votes, placing her ahead of the other candidates.

Otunnu, who is 75 years old, has presented his vision for the United Nations leadership position by focusing on restoring moral authority and strengthening trust in the global body.

The Ugandan candidate argued that the UN needs stronger leadership capable of responding to global crises while maintaining fairness and credibility among member states.

He said his experience in diplomacy and international affairs gives him a strong understanding of the challenges facing the organisation.

Otunnu previously served as Uganda’s foreign minister and later worked as UN Under-Secretary-General, where he gained experience in international peace and security matters.

His campaign has attracted attention in Uganda, with some citizens expressing support for his bid to lead the world body.

The latest straw poll results have increased optimism among his supporters, who view the improvement as a positive sign in the selection process.

However, the race remains competitive, with several candidates seeking support from members of the United Nations Security Council.

The informal straw polls are used by Security Council members to assess candidates’ strengths before the official nomination and recommendation process.

At home, Otunnu’s candidacy has also generated public discussions beyond politics, including debate over his choice of traditional clothing during official engagements.

Some Ugandans questioned whether he should wear a formal suit during international events, while others defended his traditional attire as a reflection of his identity and heritage.

Supporters argued that his clothing choice represents confidence in Ugandan culture and does not affect his ability to lead an international organisation.

The debate has added more public attention to Otunnu’s campaign as Ugandans continue following his progress in the UN race.

His supporters have called on Ugandans to unite behind his candidacy, saying his success would be a significant achievement for the country.

Otunnu’s campaign continues as candidates seek to convince Security Council members of their ability to guide the United Nations through global challenges.

The final decision on the next UN Secretary-General will depend on the formal selection process involving the Security Council and the General Assembly.
