The proposed changes would affect owners of freehold, leasehold and private Mailo land.

The ministry also plans to increase the fee for registering a certificate of title from Shs10,000 to Shs50,000.

Similarly, landowners seeking searches to confirm ownership details in the land register could pay Shs50,000, up from the current Shs10,000.

Dennis Obbo, the ministry’s spokesperson, said the proposed increases were driven by rising operating costs and the long period since the fees were last reviewed.

He explained that the ministry last revised land registration fees in 1998, making the current charges outdated compared to the cost of providing services.

Obbo said the proposed increments followed consultations with various stakeholders to assess the necessary changes.

However, the new fees are not yet in effect, as they remain subject to approval by the Ministry of Finance and Cabinet.
