A proposal to establish a UGX 500 million appreciation fund for Tooro Kingdom Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki has emerged amid heightened debate over the kingdom’s leadership and succession following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

The proposal was reportedly discussed during an online meeting held on Sunday, September 13, 2026, where participants considered the creation of what has been described as the Tooro Kingdom Omusuuga Appreciation Fund.

The initiative, according to minutes circulating online, would mobilise contributions from Batooro living in Uganda as well as those residing abroad.

The stated purpose of the proposed fund is to appreciate and support Omusuuga Kamurasi for what organisers describe as his service and contribution to Tooro Kingdom.

The Sunday meeting was reportedly chaired by Vision Bearer Princess Abwoli, whose real name is Mugabo Josephine Nyakaana.

According to the minutes, the proposed fundraising target is UGX 500 million, with the money earmarked for two major purposes.

Of the total amount, UGX 200 million would reportedly be used to purchase a motor vehicle to be presented to Omusuuga Kamurasi.

The remaining UGX 300 million would reportedly be allocated to his welfare and appreciation.

The proposal has attracted attention because of the timing of the initiative. It comes as Tooro continues to grapple with an intense public debate surrounding the succession of the late King Oyo, whose death has triggered competing discussions over who should occupy the kingdom’s throne.

The succession question has increasingly become a subject of public interest, with different royal figures, cultural leaders and other stakeholders weighing in on the process and the identity of the next Omukama.

Against that background, the decision to propose a substantial appreciation fund for the current Omusuuga is likely to draw scrutiny, particularly because of the political and cultural sensitivity surrounding developments inside the kingdom.

However, the reported proposal, on its face, is presented as an initiative aimed at appreciating and supporting Kamurasi rather than as a formal succession campaign.

The minutes circulating online reportedly frame the fundraising effort around recognition of the Omusuuga’s service to Tooro and the welfare of the kingdom’s cultural leadership.

The proposed vehicle alone would account for nearly half of the targeted UGX 500 million, while the larger portion would be reserved for welfare and appreciation.

It remains unclear from the circulating meeting information how the proposed fund would be administered, who would oversee the contributions, or what mechanism would be used to account for the money collected from Batooro in Uganda and abroad.

It is also not immediately clear whether the proposal has received formal approval from the relevant organs of Tooro Kingdom or whether it remains an initiative arising from the Sunday online meeting.

The distinction is important because the proposal comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the kingdom.

Following the death of King Oyo, attention has shifted toward the succession process, with questions surrounding the next occupant of the Tooro throne generating considerable public discussion.

The emergence of a UGX 500 million fundraising proposal for a senior cultural figure therefore adds another layer to an already closely watched period in Tooro’s history.

For supporters of the initiative, the fund could simply represent an organised effort by Batooro to recognise a cultural leader and provide him with material support.

But the timing has inevitably raised questions about whether the initiative could have a broader significance within the ongoing leadership debate.

At this stage, however, there is no evidence in the reported meeting minutes establishing that the proposed appreciation fund is directly connected to the succession contest.

The proposal should therefore be distinguished from the wider succession discussions unless organisers or other authoritative kingdom officials provide evidence linking the two.

What is clear is that the UGX 500 million proposal has emerged at a moment when every development involving Tooro’s cultural leadership is attracting heightened attention.

As the succession debate continues, the proposed Tooro Kingdom Omusuuga Appreciation Fund is likely to remain under scrutiny, particularly regarding its purpose, management and relationship, if any, to the broader discussions over the future leadership of the kingdom.

The big question now is whether this is simply an appreciation fund for Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki — or whether its emergence at this particular moment could become part of the wider battle over Tooro’s next leadership.
