Matovu reportedly sustained serious injuries following an incident in the Kibuli area and was taken to hospital, where he later died. Police have opened investigations as they work to establish exactly what happened and identify those responsible.

While initial reports circulated suggesting that Matovu had been attacked by individuals locally referred to as “Kifeesi,” other accounts emerging from the area have disputed that version of events.

According to unverified accounts circulating locally, Matovu allegedly became involved in a physical confrontation with a young man who accused the veteran musician of having a relationship with a woman identified as Rose Tumusime.

The same accounts allege that Matovu and Tumusime had been renting a house together in Kibuli and that the alleged confrontation was linked to the young man’s accusations.

However, these claims remain allegations and have not been independently verified. Police have not publicly confirmed that a relationship dispute was the motive for the incident, nor have authorities publicly established that Tumusime was responsible for or directly involved in Matovu’s death.

Reports that a woman connected to the matter had been picked up by police have also circulated, although the circumstances and purpose of any such questioning or detention would need to be confirmed by the authorities before being treated as fact.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about what happened in the moments leading to Matovu’s death. Investigators are expected to examine witness statements and other available evidence to establish the sequence of events.

Matovu was one of Uganda’s most recognised musicians and a long-serving figure in Afrigo Band. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from fellow musicians, fans and members of the public who remember him for his contribution to Ugandan music over several decades.

For now, the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation. The allegations circulating about an alleged relationship dispute should therefore be treated with caution until police or other credible sources provide confirmation.

As investigations continue, many questions remain unanswered, including what triggered the reported confrontation, who was involved, and what ultimately led to the injuries that claimed the life of the veteran musician.

Authorities are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
