FORT PORTAL — The Tooro Kingdom has entered a transitional period following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, with his uncle and head of the Babiito royal clan, Omusuga Charles Kamurasi, saying he will oversee the kingdom until a new king is installed.
In a video addressing developments within the kingdom, Kamurasi indicated that the monarchy now has an interim leader to guide Tooro through the period between the death of the reigning monarch and the installation of his successor.
Kamurasi, who is closely connected to the late King Oyo’s royal family, said the interim arrangement is intended to provide continuity as the kingdom navigates what could be a sensitive period involving mourning, burial arrangements and succession.
“The Kingdom has an interim leader,” Kamurasi said, while stressing the need for unity and stability during the transition.

His remarks come at a time when attention has increasingly shifted toward the future leadership of Tooro following the passing of King Oyo. The late monarch, who ascended to the throne as a child in 1995, had become one of Uganda’s most prominent cultural leaders.
Kamurasi’s statement is expected to attract significant interest among members of the Batooro community, particularly because succession to the Tooro throne is a matter deeply rooted in the traditions and customs of the Babiito royal clan.
The Omusuga further said he would remain King of Tooro until a new monarch is formally installed, signalling that the interim leadership arrangement is expected to remain in place throughout the succession process.

The transition is likely to involve consultations among members of the royal family, clan leaders and other relevant kingdom authorities before a successor is officially identified and enthroned.
Kamurasi also called for continued prayers for the kingdom as it confronts what he described as turbulent times. His message appeared aimed at encouraging calm and discouraging speculation as preparations continue following the death of the king.
The question of succession has already generated public discussion, with social media platforms carrying different claims and opinions about who could eventually take over the throne.
However, the kingdom’s leadership is expected to rely on established cultural procedures rather than public speculation when determining the next Omukama.
For now, the interim leadership under Kamurasi provides a temporary structure for the kingdom as Tooro mourns King Oyo and prepares for the next chapter of its history.
The coming days are therefore expected to be crucial as the royal family and kingdom authorities balance the demands of mourning with the traditional process required to install a new Omukama.
