King Oyo, who died at the age of 34, had no biological children of his own, making the issue of succession particularly significant as the Kingdom prepares for the next stage of its royal leadership.

Tooro’s succession is guided by its customs and traditions, with the royal lineage playing a central role in determining who can ascend to the throne.

Who Could Succeed King Oyo?

One of the royal figures likely to attract attention is Princess Ruth Komuntale, King Oyo’s sister, who has a son and a daughter.

Her children could potentially feature in succession discussions, although the Kingdom’s traditions and established procedures would determine whether either is eligible to become the next Omukama.

Another prominent figure in the royal family was the late Prince Jimmy Mugenyi, King Oyo’s uncle, who played an important role in the Kingdom’s leadership and served as a regent during Oyo’s early years.

Prince David Kijanangoma, the son of the late Paul Christopher Kijanangoma and a cousin of King Oyo, has also previously been at the centre of succession disputes.

Kijanangoma challenged King Oyo’s position in 2013 and 2015, making his name notable in discussions about the Tooro throne.

Another senior royal is Prince Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki, the head of the Babiito royal clan and an uncle of the late King Oyo.

His position within the royal establishment could also make him an important figure as the Kingdom begins the process of determining its next monarch.

Succession Process

Following the death of a reigning monarch, traditional institutions and members of the royal family play an important role in organising the transition to a new king.

Historically, the royal establishments of Tooro and neighbouring Bunyoro have been associated with carefully managing the announcement and succession process to maintain order and prevent confusion.

However, the Tooro Kingdom has not yet officially announced who will succeed King Oyo.

The next Omukama will ultimately be determined in accordance with the Kingdom’s customs, traditions and established succession procedures.

King Oyo ascended the throne in 1995 at the age of three following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He went on to become one of Uganda’s most prominent cultural leaders, championing initiatives in education, healthcare, youth empowerment, environmental conservation and tourism.

As Tooro mourns the death of a monarch who ruled for more than three decades, attention now turns to the royal family and Kingdom authorities as preparations for the succession get underway.
