The announcement was made on Thursday, August 27, 2026, in an official statement issued by the Kingdom’s Prime Minister (Omuhikirwa), Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.

“This is to inform you that His Majesty King Oyo is currently in a critical condition,” Rwomiire said, describing the situation as “difficult and deeply concerning.”

The Prime Minister called on the people of Tooro, friends of the Kingdom and well-wishers across Uganda and beyond to keep the 34-year-old monarch in their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.

“At this difficult and deeply concerning time, we humbly ask the people of Tooro, our friends and well-wishers in Uganda and across the world to keep His Majesty in their thoughts and prayers,” the statement read.

As concern spread across the region following reports about the King’s health, the Tooro Kingdom urged the public to avoid speculation, rumours and the sharing of unverified information.

King Oyo, whose full name is Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, ascended the Tooro throne in September 1995 at the age of three following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. His coronation made him the world’s youngest reigning monarch.

Over the past three decades, King Oyo has become one of Uganda’s most prominent cultural leaders, championing initiatives in education, health, youth empowerment, environmental conservation and tourism across the Tooro region.

The Kingdom’s announcement has sparked widespread concern and prayers from subjects and well-wishers, with officials urging everyone to respect the privacy of the King and the Royal Family while awaiting further official updates on his condition.
