The thanksgiving was not only a spiritual dedication but also a moment to reflect on milestones achieved under Director General Fred K. Bamwesigye. His leadership has seen Uganda’s aviation sector record significant progress, strengthening its reputation regionally and internationally.
One of the most notable achievements has been Uganda’s improved aviation security ratings. Following the International Civil Aviation Organization’s audit, Uganda scored above both regional and global averages. This accomplishment reassured international partners of the safety and reliability of Uganda’s aviation systems.
Passenger traffic has also grown steadily. Entebbe International Airport recorded an increase from 1.93 million international passengers in 2023 to 2.24 million in 2024. Cargo volumes rose sharply, with exports reaching nearly 45,000 tonnes and imports surpassing 22,000 tonnes. Regional airports such as Arua, Gulu, Pakuba, and Mbarara also registered growth, with traffic rising from 31,000 passengers in 2023 to nearly 40,000 in 2024.
Infrastructure development has been another highlight. The upgrade of Entebbe International Airport is nearing completion, with the new 20,000‑square‑meter passenger terminal building over 80 percent finished and expected to be ready by mid‑2025. Once complete, the airport’s capacity will expand from two million to at least 3.5 million passengers annually. Kisoro Aerodrome has seen resurfaced runways and plans for a new terminal, while projects for Kidepo International Airport and upgrades for Gulu and Arua aerodromes are underway.
Operational improvements have also been prioritized. UCAA has invested in modern equipment, including advanced security screening systems, new fire trucks, and satellite‑based navigation technologies. The introduction of a hazard identification and reporting tool during the inaugural Safety Week in 2024 reflects a proactive approach to safety management. Additionally, a capacity‑building agreement with ICAO is supporting the development of a new National Air Navigation Plan, ensuring Uganda remains aligned with international standards.
The thanksgiving service symbolized gratitude and reaffirmed UCAA’s mission to blend technical excellence with spiritual dedication. As prayers were offered for guidance in the new financial year, the Authority’s record of achievements under DG Bamwesigye stood as a testament to resilience, vision, and faith. With continued investment, strategic partnerships, and divine dedication, Uganda’s aviation sector is poised to soar even higher in the years ahead.
