Speaking during a grassroots meeting convened by the NRM party chairperson for Otuke District at the district headquarters on Friday, Hon. Acon, who doubles as the District NRM Chairperson, urged political leaders and citizens alike to set aside differences and work collaboratively towards the betterment of the people of Otuke.

“Divisive politics will only slow down our progress. We must come together as one people with a common goal of developing our district,” Hon. Acon told the gathering of local leaders, including LC3 chairpersons and area councillors.

The meeting, which was specifically called for sub-county chairpersons and LCV councillors, was aimed at strengthening grassroots coordination within the ruling party and fostering dialogue between elected leaders at various levels of government.

Hon. Acon highlighted his positive working relationship with the Otuke District leadership, particularly noting his strong communication and connection with District Chairperson Francis Abola, which he said is yielding tangible results in service delivery.

“My connection with the district leadership is very good and is yielding positive results in effective service delivery to the people of Otuke,” Hon. Acon stated, pointing to the collaborative efforts between his office and the district administration.

Addressing the plight of communities affected by recent natural disasters, the MP revealed that he had forwarded a request to the Office of the Prime Minister through Disaster Minister Sam Engola, and the government has approved the distribution of over 2,000 iron sheets to schools that were damaged by a devastating hailstorm in the district.

The relief intervention is expected to provide immediate shelter and learning facilities to affected educational institutions, allowing students to resume normal classes without interruption.

In a further commitment to improving livelihoods, Hon. Acon announced plans to return to the Olympic Village project and secure funding for seven additional boreholes to serve communities across Otuke District, addressing the persistent challenge of access to clean and safe drinking water.

LC5 Chairperson Francis Abola, who also addressed the gathering, echoed the MP’s call for unity and cautioned leaders against engaging in politics that breeds division.

“I urge all elected leaders in Otuke District to work for the betterment of their communities rather than focusing on personal gains or political rivalries,” Abola emphasized, calling on leaders to prioritize service delivery and the welfare of their constituents.

Several sub-county LC3 chairpersons present at the meeting raised concerns about their low salaries, urging Hon. Acon to forward their requests through Parliament to address the issue of inadequate remuneration for local government leaders.

The chairpersons also expressed concern about the lack of reliable means of transport, which they said hampers their ability to effectively serve their communities and oversee development projects at the grassroots level.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from the leadership to work harmoniously and ensure that government programmes, including the ongoing restocking processes, reach the intended beneficiaries.

Hon. Acon urged those handling the restocking exercise to ensure transparency and accountability, emphasizing that “the right beneficiaries must receive what they are supposed to get.”
