Uganda Airlines has become the flagship of aviation transformation under the current administration, symbolizing the country’s determination to strengthen national aviation capacity. Once limited in scope, the airline has expanded significantly, launching new routes to Lusaka, Abuja, Harare, and Mumbai. These additions boosted passenger traffic and enhanced Uganda’s connectivity to key regional and international markets.

Director General Fred K. Bamwesigye highlighted the importance of this expansion, saying, “Commencement of Uganda Airlines flights on the Abuja, Lagos, and Mumbai routes, plus other new air operators joining the Ugandan airspace, contributed to the increase in traffic.” His remarks underscored the link between national carrier growth and overall industry performance.

The administration’s support for Uganda Airlines reflects a broader strategy to strengthen national aviation. By granting new licenses to operators and welcoming carriers such as Premier Airlines, Kush Air, and Flynas, the Authority diversified Uganda’s airspace. Flynas, for example, commenced flights between Riyadh and Entebbe in January 2025, adding Middle Eastern connectivity.

This expansion contributed to a surge in international passenger numbers, which rose to 2,243,104 in 2024, surpassing pre‑pandemic levels. Cargo traffic also grew, with exports reaching nearly 45,000 tons. Increased international trade and a stable economic environment provided the foundation for this growth.

Stakeholders welcomed the expansion. A representative from Uganda Airlines noted, “Our new routes are not only about passengers but also about cargo. We are connecting Uganda to markets that matter, and this strengthens the economy.”

Infrastructure upgrades at Entebbe International Airport supported this growth. The modified terminal building provided modern facilities for passengers and delegates attending major summits. The ongoing expansion of the passenger terminal will raise capacity to 3.5 million passengers annually, ensuring Uganda Airlines and other operators can meet rising demand.

Safety initiatives reinforced reliability. Two new fire trucks were commissioned, a hazard identification tool was launched, and the inaugural Safety Week reinforced resilience. Emirates partnered in safety activities, underscoring international confidence in Uganda’s aviation environment.

Regional airports also benefited. Mbarara saw traffic rise by 118 percent, Arua by 92 percent, and Gulu by 36 percent. These figures demonstrate that aviation growth is not confined to Entebbe but is spreading across the country.

The administration also prioritized environmental sustainability. Measures such as green procurement, air quality monitoring, and ICAO’s CORSIA carbon offsetting scheme were adopted. These steps ensure that Uganda’s aviation growth is environmentally responsible.

Uganda Airlines’ expansion is more than a commercial success; it is a national achievement. By supporting the carrier’s growth, diversifying operators, and modernizing infrastructure, the current administration has transformed Uganda’s aviation landscape. The airline’s success is intertwined with the broader transformation of UCAA, positioning Uganda as a credible hub in regional and international aviation.

As Bamwesigye reminded stakeholders, “The Authority has registered major milestones over the past year and is entering 2025 with stronger systems, improved facilities, and a clear roadmap for future expansion.” His words reflect the administration’s determination to link national carrier growth with overall industry transformation.

Uganda Airlines has strengthened national aviation capacity, boosted connectivity, and enhanced Uganda’s credibility. Its expansion is a cornerstone of Uganda’s aviation renaissance, ensuring that the country’s skies are open, secure, and ready for the future.
