Uganda’s aviation industry has embraced environmental sustainability as a central pillar of transformation under the current administration. The Civil Aviation Authority has integrated global frameworks such as ICAO’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) into its operations, ensuring that growth is balanced with responsibility.

Director General Fred K. Bamwesigye explained this commitment, saying, “At UCAA, the Environment Strategy is implemented through the State Action Plan Initiative and ICAO’s CORSIA. We are adopting measures that include aircraft technology, improvements in air traffic management, operational efficiencies, and sustainable aviation fuels.” His remarks highlighted the Authority’s determination to align Uganda’s aviation industry with international sustainability standards.

Measures have already been implemented at Entebbe International Airport and regional aerodromes. These include green infrastructure such as permeable pavements, green roofs, and alternative energy sources. Air quality monitoring has been introduced, and environmentally friendly waste management systems are being deployed. Electric buses and vehicles are being prioritized for airside operations, reflecting a shift toward eco‑friendly procurement.

Stakeholders have welcomed these initiatives. A representative from the Ministry of Environment noted, “Uganda’s aviation industry is now integrating sustainability into its core operations. This is not only about compliance but about protecting our environment while supporting growth.”

Statistics reinforce the importance of these measures. International passenger numbers rose to 2,243,104 in 2024, while cargo exports reached 44,865 tons. Commercial aircraft movements increased to 32,552, and overflights rose to 25,137. These figures demonstrate that Uganda’s aviation industry is expanding, making sustainability measures even more critical.

Air navigation systems have also been modernized to reduce emissions. Direct routing procedures shorten flight distances, reducing fuel consumption. Continuous climb and descent operations improve efficiency and reduce noise. These innovations reflect a forward‑looking approach to aviation management.

Safety initiatives complement sustainability. Two new fire trucks were commissioned, and the inaugural Safety Week in 2024 introduced a hazard identification tool. Emirates partnered in safety activities, including a foreign object debris walk and community engagement at Nakiwogo market. These initiatives demonstrated that safety and sustainability are now embedded in Uganda’s aviation industry.

Stakeholders from the private sector have praised these initiatives. A representative from Uganda Airlines noted, “Sustainability is now part of our operations. We are reporting CO2 emissions annually under CORSIA and exploring sustainable aviation fuels. This strengthens our credibility and competitiveness.”

Uganda’s aviation industry has embraced environmental sustainability as a core strategy. By integrating global frameworks, adopting green infrastructure, and modernizing air navigation systems, the current administration has ensured that growth is balanced with responsibility.

This transformation reflects a vision of aviation that is not only about expansion but also about stewardship. Uganda’s skies are now managed with a commitment to sustainability, ensuring that aviation supports both economic growth and environmental protection.
