MP Nabulo Opens Five Boreholes to End Long Walks for Water in Sironko

Our Reporter | Sironko — Sironko District Woman Member of Parliament Asha Nabulo Mafabi, in partnership with One Ummah Uganda, has launched five newly constructed boreholes aimed at easing persistent water shortages in several communities across the district.

The new water sources are expected to improve access to safe and clean water, particularly for women and adolescent girls who have been travelling long distances in search of water for domestic use.

The boreholes have been installed in densely populated communities, including Bunabonyo in Buwasa Sub-county, Kidowa in Nalusaala, and Nabudisirua “A,” Dahami and Bunagawoya in Busulani Sub-county.

Residents said the lack of nearby water sources had exposed women and girls to numerous risks as they travelled long distances to fetch water.

Irene Nabende, the women’s chairperson in Bunabonyo Village, said women and girls previously had to walk long distances in search of water, exposing them to sexual violence, including defilement and rape.

She said the situation had also contributed to teenage pregnancies and school dropouts among girls.

“We now have water near us, and we hope this will solve the problem,” Nabende said, while thanking Nabulo and her partners for the intervention.

Peresi Mukwana, a resident of Bunagawoya, also thanked the legislator for supporting the community, saying residents had endured significant difficulties accessing safe water.

Sironko District LCV Chairman Alex Guga Nabende said the district continues to face a major water shortage and appealed for more development partners to support the construction of additional water sources.

He commended Nabulo and One Ummah Uganda for supporting communities with the new boreholes and urged other stakeholders to invest in similar projects.

Nabulo said the water crisis in densely populated areas requires collective efforts from political leaders, development partners and other stakeholders to ensure communities have access to safe and clean water.

She thanked One Ummah Uganda for supporting the district with boreholes and other interventions in the past.

Nabulo said leaders should focus on leaving a tangible legacy through development projects that directly benefit the communities they represent.

“To know your people’s problems, you have to go out and lobby for solutions. The wars of politics are over, and now we are focusing on development,” she said.

She also urged residents, through their local leaders, to document the challenges affecting their communities so that they can be addressed systematically.

“After five years, there will be no need for campaigning. I will simply come back to ask for your vote for a second term because I will have worked and delivered on the pledges I made,” Nabulo said.

The launch of the boreholes comes as communities in parts of Sironko continue to call for increased investment in safe water infrastructure, particularly in densely populated areas where existing water sources are inadequate.
