KAMPALA – A 64-year-old Canadian national has been remanded to Luzira Prison after appearing before the Kampala Chief Magistrate’s Court over allegations linked to a gold transaction fraud involving approximately US$1.5 million (about Shs5.5 billion).
Michel Faille was on Friday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa, who remanded him until August 12, 2026, to allow police to continue investigations into the case.
Prosecution alleges that Faille is connected to a scheme in which individuals were allegedly deceived into paying large sums of money in purported gold transactions. Details of the alleged fraud were not extensively discussed in court as investigations remain ongoing.
The case comes amid increased scrutiny of Uganda’s gold trade, where authorities have repeatedly cautioned local and foreign investors to conduct thorough due diligence before entering into high-value mineral transactions.
The court directed that the accused remain on remand until his next appearance on August 12, when the matter will return for mention as investigations continue.
Under Ugandan law, Michel Faille is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court.
