MITOOMA — Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has pledged to work with Minister for Local Government Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi to intensify the fight against corruption, abuse of office and poor service delivery across Uganda.
Tayebwa made the commitment during a community Baraza held at Rwakitandara Playground in Mitooma District, where local leaders, residents, community stakeholders and technical officials from the Ministry of Local Government gathered to discuss challenges affecting service delivery and accountability.
Tayebwa, who is also the Area Member of Parliament for Ruhinda North, said the government was committed to strengthening efforts to fight corruption and ensure public resources are used for their intended purposes.
“As directed by the President, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and PLU Chairman MK, we are ready to work with Hon. Minister Balaam and fight corruption and abuse of office across the country,” Tayebwa said.
He said the fight against corruption should not be left to government officials alone, urging citizens to take responsibility by rejecting practices such as bribery, extortion and other forms of corruption.
Tayebwa called for firm action against public officials who abuse their offices but also challenged members of the public to examine their own conduct and contribute to improving accountability and service delivery in their communities.
He said lasting progress requires both leaders and citizens to uphold integrity and protect public resources.
The Baraza provided residents with an opportunity to raise concerns about government programmes, service delivery, accountability and the conduct of public officials in Mitooma.
Barugahara thanked residents for turning up and openly sharing their concerns, saying the issues raised would be followed up by the Ministry of Local Government in collaboration with district authorities and other relevant agencies.
He said the ministry would work to ensure that government programmes deliver the intended services to communities.
The engagement forms part of the “Expose the Corrupt” campaign, which seeks to promote accountability, combat corruption and protect public resources.
Barugahara said continued cooperation between government, local leaders and communities would be critical in restoring accountability and improving service delivery across the country.
