Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I is set to take over the Tooro Kingdom throne, but beyond his September 29 coronation, another issue could have a major bearing on the future of the royal family: who will eventually succeed him.
Nyabongo I was selected by the Babiito Royal Clan to succeed the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV and was later endorsed by the Rukurato. The government has also recognised the succession process, with his coronation taking place at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City.
However, attention has shifted to the traditional requirements governing succession in the Tooro royal family. Babiito Clan spokesman Rev. Fr. Dr Charles Oyo has explained that maternal clan lineage remains an important consideration when determining whether a person qualifies to inherit the Tooro throne.
The issue has placed the king-elect’s wife, Rebecca Amoding, in the spotlight. Amoding is of Iteso background and comes from outside Tooro. According to Fr Oyo, her background does not prevent her from becoming queen, but it does not automatically give her children the Tooro clan status traditionally considered necessary for succession.
Under the traditional interpretation outlined by the Babiito spokesman, an heir to the Tooro throne must be born to a mother belonging to one of the recognised Tooro clans. This means that while Nyabongo I can have children with Amoding, the question of whether such children would qualify to succeed him could become an important cultural issue when the time for succession eventually comes.

For now, Nyabongo I’s immediate focus is his coronation and the beginning of his reign. The incoming king is a Born-Again Christian, and his marriage to Amoding was conducted at Watoto Church in Kampala. As he begins his reign, the balance between his personal choices, his faith, the traditions of the Babiito and the future succession of the Tooro throne is likely to remain an important subject of discussion.
