MBARARA, Uganda — The Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) for Mbarara City North Division, Jackline Kankunda, has directed city authorities to evaluate renovation works carried out on a two-classroom block at Nyabuhama Primary School following concerns over the quality of the work.
The renovation project reportedly cost UGX40.7 million, but Kankunda raised concerns after cracks were observed on the building despite the recent works.
Kankunda questioned the quality of the renovation and called for an assessment of the work to establish whether it was executed according to the required standards.
She also faulted the City Civil Engineer, Eng. Abiaz Nkwatsibwe, for failing to provide the project’s Bills of Quantities (BoQs) when asked to account for the works.
The absence of the contractor, Bless Team Uganda Limited, from the site also raised concerns, as the company was reportedly unavailable to respond to questions regarding the renovation and the quality of the work.
Kankunda’s directive comes amid growing calls for greater accountability and proper supervision of public projects to ensure that government funds are used effectively.
The evaluation is expected to establish the quality of the renovation works, the causes of the cracks and whether the project was implemented in accordance with the approved specifications.
