The event, scheduled for 9:00am at Kaunda Grounds, is being organised by senior NRM cadres in collaboration with the Acholi Cultural Institution to officially welcome home Gen. Otema following decades of service in the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).

The Paramount Chief of Acholi, Rwot David Onen Acana II, has called upon Acholi subjects to turn up in large numbers to celebrate the retired general and honour his contribution to the country.

Speaking at his palace in Gulu City on Monday, Rwot Acana said Gen. Otema’s return home after years of military service is an occasion worthy of celebration.

The cultural leader also commended Gen. Otema for involving the Acholi Cultural Institution in preparations for his homecoming before embarking on his retirement.

His final assignment was as Commander of the UPDF Reserve Forces, a position he held before his retirement.

His retirement comes nearly two years after he first sought to leave active military service, with reports indicating that he had expressed interest in joining elective politics in Bardege-Layibi Division.

During consultations, Gen. Otema expressed interest in the Bardege-Layibi parliamentary seat.

Leaders expected at homecoming

The August 28 celebration is expected to attract government officials, political leaders, military and security officers, cultural and religious leaders, businesspeople, professionals and members of the public.

Organisers have also invited Ugandans from across the country to join the Acholi community in giving the retired general what they describe as a befitting homecoming.

The event will be held under the slogan:
