ENTEBBE, UGANDA – Police in Entebbe Division are investigating an attack on Kibuku County Member of Parliament Hon. Herbert Kinobere and other mourners during the burial of former Busiro South MP Charles Matovu in Kungu Lutale along Nakawuka Road on October 25, 2026.

According to police, the attack occurred when a group of suspected political activists allegedly opposed to the presence of National Resistance Movement (NRM)-leaning mourners confronted them during the burial ceremony.

The confrontation reportedly resulted in damage to Kinobere’s vehicle, including the deflation of its tyres, forcing the legislator to flee the scene to avoid possible harm.

Police said officers intervened and secured the affected mourners, including those who had sought refuge following the incident.

A total of 20 suspects were arrested and detained at Entebbe Police Station as investigations into the attack continue.

The suspects are being investigated over their alleged involvement in the violence and damage to property. Their arrest does not, however, establish guilt, and the allegations remain subject to investigation.

The incident has raised concerns about political intolerance and the safety of mourners attending burial ceremonies, which traditionally bring together relatives, friends, leaders and members of the community regardless of their political affiliations.

Police have urged the public to respect mourners irrespective of their political beliefs and warned against violence, intimidation and destruction of property.

Authorities have also called for restraint during public gatherings, emphasising the need to resolve political differences peacefully and allow people to pay their last respects without fear of harassment or attack.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
