KOBOKO — George Ambe, a former Speaker of Koboko District Council and veteran local government leader, has died at the age of 78.
Ambe died on August 27, 2026, after spending more than 16 days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to family members.
He was remembered as a respected elder and experienced local government leader who played a significant role in the administration and community affairs of Koboko District in Uganda’s West Nile sub-region.
Ambe served as Speaker of the Koboko District Council for several years, where he was involved in local administration and community leadership.
Even after leaving district leadership, he remained active in community development. In his later years, he served as chairperson and treasurer of Smart Change Uganda, a community-based organisation involved in development initiatives in northern Uganda, including Arua and Koboko.
His death is expected to be deeply felt across Koboko, where he was widely known for his experience in local government and commitment to community affairs.
Koboko, located in the West Nile sub-region, also holds historical significance as the home area of former Ugandan president Idi Amin.
Family members and local leaders are expected to announce funeral arrangements and other details regarding his burial.
Further information about tributes from district authorities and other leaders was not immediately available.
