KASESE, UGANDA — The Uganda Police Force has launched investigations into an online investment scheme accused of defrauding residents of Kasese District of their money.
Police say investigators from the Police Headquarters have arrived in Kasese to register complaints from people who allegedly lost money after investing through the HUT 8 online application.
Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, said the investigators are gathering statements and complaints from affected residents as part of the ongoing inquiry.
According to Maate, the online platform attracted a number of residents by promising them substantial returns on their investments.
However, the investors allegedly lost their money after the platform stopped responding and disappeared after collecting funds, leaving several residents counting their losses.
Police have encouraged people who invested money through the platform and believe they were defrauded to come forward and register their complaints with the investigators.
The investigation is expected to establish how the scheme operated, the amount of money allegedly lost by investors and those behind the platform.
Police have not yet announced any arrests as investigations continue.
Authorities are also expected to establish whether the platform was operating legally and whether other people outside Kasese may have been affected.
The Uganda Police Force has continued to caution the public against online investment opportunities that promise unusually high or quick returns without adequate verification.
