Police have arrested the driver suspected to have been involved in the Namulanda road crash that claimed the lives of two Next Media journalists and left another journalist seriously injured.
The suspect, identified as John Baptist Kigozi, was arrested during a joint operation involving different security agencies on the night of August 13, 2026.
Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect was taken into custody following investigations into the fatal crash along Entebbe Road.
“The driver, identified as Kigozi John Baptist, who was involved in the fatal crash at Namulanda along Entebbe Road that claimed the lives of two journalists working with Next Media and seriously injured another, has been arrested in a joint inter-agency operation conducted last night,” Kananura said.
Police said Kigozi will be presented before court at the appropriate time to face charges related to the accident.
“The suspect will be produced in court at the appropriate time to face the charges and allow justice to prevail,” Kananura added.
The arrest comes nearly one week after the tragic accident that shocked the media fraternity and left colleagues, friends and families mourning.
The crash occurred on August 7, 2026, at Namulanda along Entebbe Road, involving a Toyota Allex carrying the journalists and a Toyota Hilux.

The accident claimed the lives of Next Media journalists Badru Kasirye and Isaac Ndamagye, who died at the scene of the crash.
Their colleague, Brian Ssemanda, popularly known as Makona, survived the accident but sustained serious injuries and was rushed for medical attention.
The deaths of the two journalists sparked grief among media professionals, with many paying tribute to their dedication and contribution to journalism.
Next Media mourned the loss of the two employees, describing them as valuable members of the organization whose work touched many lives.
Following the accident, police launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
Authorities examined details surrounding the crash, including the movement of the vehicles involved and possible causes of the collision.
Police have not yet revealed the specific charges that Kigozi will face in court, saying more details will be provided as investigations continue.
Kananura said authorities would continue gathering information and provide updates on the progress of the case.
The Namulanda crash has once again raised concerns about road safety and the need for motorists to exercise greater caution while using Uganda’s busy highways.
Friends and relatives of the deceased journalists continue to mourn their passing, remembering them for their professionalism and commitment to their work.
Members of the public have also expressed sympathy towards the families of the victims and wished a quick recovery to Brian Ssemanda.
As the legal process begins, police said the suspect will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations before court.
The media fraternity continues to honor the memory of Badru Kasirye and Isaac Ndamagye as investigations into the accident continue.
