The 7.5km section forms part of the wider 21.8-kilometre road connecting Hamurwa, Rwondo, Kabisha, Mukisa and Nyakatare.

The works were launched by Rubanda Resident District Commissioner Kyeyune Ssenyonjo, who urged the district engineering team to speed up the works before the onset of heavy rains.

Speaking to residents in Rwondo Village, Shebeya Parish, Hamurwa Sub-county, Ssenyonjo challenged the district engineer to ensure that the works are completed in time to minimise the impact of flooding on the community.

The scope of works includes excavation of side drains along the swampy sections, installation of 56 metres of 900mm culverts and 21 metres of 600mm culverts on concrete bases, as well as raising, grading and compacting the road surface.

Rubanda District LC5 Chairperson Ampeire Stephen Kasyaba, who was represented at the launch by District Vice Chairperson Hon. Akampurira Kesaphari Prossy, said the drainage works would improve access to the area and facilitate movement of traders to Karukara weekly market.

She said the lack of proper water crossings had also affected access to schools, particularly during the rainy season, making it difficult for teachers and pupils to reach their schools.

Akampurira also highlighted the district’s achievements in Shebeya Parish and challenged District Engineer Habimana John to ensure that the project delivers value for money.

Hamurwa Sub-county LC5 Councillor Musimenta Rose and LC3 Chairperson Hon. Nyarare said Shebeya Parish had previously faced the risk of being cut off from the rest of Hamurwa Sub-county during periods of heavy rainfall.

They welcomed the drainage works and commended the cooperation of Minister Henry Musasizi, Rubanda West MP Bruce Balaba Kabaasa, Woman MP Hon. Ninsiima Evelyn Kikafunda and LC5 Chairperson Ampeire Stephen Kasyaba in efforts to improve the road.

Rubanda District Engineer Habimana John outlined the planned works and urged residents to cooperate with the district technical team during construction.

The district authorities said the drainage improvements are expected to address water-related challenges along the affected section and improve connectivity for residents, traders, teachers and pupils in the surrounding communities.
