The crash occurred at around 11:00am when the driver of a Canter truck, registration number UAX 513N, reportedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a boda boda stage.

According to Uganda Police Traffic spokesperson Michael Kananura, two boda boda riders died instantly at the scene, while a pedestrian who sustained serious injuries later died at a hospital.

“Two boda boda riders died instantly, while another pedestrian, who sustained injuries in the crash, died in the hospital,” Kananura said.

Police have arrested the truck driver, who allegedly fled the scene shortly after the crash. He is currently being held at Old Kampala Central Police Station as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident continue.

The fatal crash comes amid intensified enforcement operations by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety targeting vehicles considered dangerous or unfit for use in the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

The operations, which began on August 24, have so far resulted in the impounding of more than 178 public service vehicles found in dangerous mechanical condition.

According to Kananura, the impounded vehicles had various mechanical defects, including faulty brakes, worn-out tyres and compromised structural components.

Police say the ongoing enforcement is aimed at reducing road crashes and ensuring that motorists operate vehicles that meet required safety standards.
