The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has enforced stringent standards in its ongoing nationwide recruitment campaign, excluding applicants with ringworm, scars, and missing teeth to uphold high hygiene and physical fitness requirements.

Criteria and Public Statement

Capt. George Musinguzi, the public information officer overseeing the Teso sub-region, emphasized the importance of hygiene in military service. “Having ringworm is a sign of irresponsibility that the UPDF cannot tolerate. If an individual cannot maintain personal hygiene, how can they be entrusted to defend our nation?” he asserted.

The recruitment drive targets youth aged 18-22 who have completed Senior Four education between 2019 and 2023.

Physical Fitness Requirements

Capt. Musinguzi elaborated that applicants with scars are also ineligible due to the rigorous physical exercises they must undergo upon selection. “Successful candidates undergo rigorous physical training that is unsuitable for individuals with scars,” he explained. This criterion ensures that recruits are physically capable of fulfilling the demands of military duty without hindrance.
