Kamurasi is reported to have declined an opportunity to ascend the Tooro throne after allegedly demanding greater financial transparency within the kingdom before accepting the crown.

According to accounts surrounding the succession process, Kamurasi had emerged as the preferred candidate of the Royal Succession Committee, which was tasked with identifying a successor following the death of King Oyo.

However, rather than immediately accepting the prestigious position, Kamurasi reportedly demanded that the kingdom’s finances and property ownership be subjected to a comprehensive forensic audit.

The proposed audit, according to the account, was intended to establish a clear distinction between assets belonging to the Tooro Kingdom institution and properties regarded as private assets of the royal family.

The demand reportedly created difficulties for the succession committee, which was operating under time constraints following the death of the young monarch.

With Kamurasi unwilling to accept the throne without the financial review, the committee is said to have moved to another candidate, eventually settling on Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma.

The reported development adds another layer to an already complicated succession debate in Tooro, where questions surrounding the rightful successor have attracted competing claims from members of the royal family and other stakeholders.

Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has since emerged as the figure announced as the new king, but his selection has faced opposition from some members of the late King’s immediate family.

The disagreement has reportedly extended to the courts, with opponents arguing that the appointment conflicts with instructions contained in a 2022 will attributed to the late King Oyo.

The will has become a central issue in the succession dispute, with questions being raised over whether its provisions should determine who succeeds Oyo and how those provisions should be interpreted within Tooro’s traditional and legal framework.

The reported decision by Kamurasi therefore places financial accountability alongside succession as one of the major issues emerging from the transition.

For supporters of greater accountability, an audit before taking control of a traditional institution could be viewed as an attempt to establish clarity over the ownership, management and administration of kingdom resources.

At the same time, the circumstances surrounding Kamurasi’s reported decision, including whether he was formally offered the throne and whether the Royal Succession Committee officially ranked him as its first choice, would need to be independently confirmed.

The development also raises broader questions about the management of cultural institutions whose assets may include land, buildings, businesses and other property accumulated over generations.

In the case of Tooro, such questions are particularly sensitive because the kingdom’s institutional property and the personal property of members of the royal family may have different legal and traditional statuses.

The succession controversy now involves several interconnected issues: the identity of the rightful monarch, the interpretation of King Oyo’s alleged 2022 will, the authority of the succession process and the ownership and management of kingdom assets.

Kamurasi’s reported refusal has consequently added a financial accountability dimension to a succession contest that was already attracting significant public attention.

Whether the goalkeeper’s reported demand influenced the eventual selection of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma remains a matter requiring confirmation from the succession committee and other authoritative sources.

As the dispute continues, attention is likely to remain focused on the legal proceedings, the position of the royal family and the mechanisms being used to determine the future leadership of the Tooro Kingdom.
